Hiring a House Cleaner in Raleigh10 Questions to Ask First

Who will clean, what is included, how the price is set and what happens if something is missed. What to ask and what a good answer sounds like.

Letting someone into your home is a real act of trust, and a five-minute call is often all people have before they say yes. The right questions in that call tell you more than any ad or website. If you are hiring a house cleaner in Raleigh for the first time, or switching after a bad experience, here is what to ask and what a good answer sounds like.

The short answer

Before hiring, find out who will actually clean your home, what each visit includes, how the price is set, how access and keys are handled, what happens if something is missed and what the cancellation rules are. A professional company answers all of these clearly and puts the price and what is included in writing before the first visit.

10 questions to ask before hiring a house cleaner

1. Who will clean my home, and will it be the same person every time?

Consistency matters more than most people expect. A cleaner who comes back to your home every visit learns your priorities, your surfaces and your pets. Ask whether recurring clients keep the same cleaner on the same day, and what happens when that person is sick or on vacation.

2. What exactly is included in a visit?

Ask for the checklist. A good company can tell you room by room what gets done on a regular visit and what is extra, such as the inside of the fridge or oven. If the answer is vague, expect results to be vague too. You can see an example on our recurring house cleaning page.

3. How is the price calculated?

Prices usually depend on the size of the home, the number of bathrooms, the type of service, the condition of the home and how often you book. Recurring visits generally cost less per visit than one-time cleans, because the home never builds up as much dirt between them. Ask for a written quote that lists what is included.

4. Do I need a deep clean first?

If the home has not been professionally cleaned in a few months, an honest company will usually recommend starting with a deep cleaning. It is not an upsell. It is the visit that removes the buildup so recurring visits can keep the home clean instead of catching up.

5. Do you bring supplies, and what products do you use?

Most companies bring their own products and equipment. Ask what kind. If you have kids, pets or allergies, ask whether they use eco-friendly products and whether they can use yours if you prefer specific brands.

6. How do access and keys work?

You usually do not need to be home. Ask how door codes, lockboxes or spare keys are stored, who has access to them, and how alarms and gate codes are handled. The answer should be specific.

7. What happens if something is missed?

Every company makes mistakes sometimes. What matters is how they fix them. Ask whether there is a satisfaction guarantee, how long you have to report a problem and whether they come back to redo the area.

8. What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Plans change. Ask how much notice you need to give to move or cancel a visit and whether there is a fee for late cancellations or for when the team cannot get in. A clear written policy protects both sides. Ours is on our customer guidelines page.

9. Are you insured?

Ask whether the company carries liability insurance and request proof if it matters to you. It covers accidental damage to your home or belongings during a visit.

10. How do I reach you?

Ask how quickly they reply and whether you can call or text. When you need to move a date or add a request, fast communication is what makes the service easy to live with.

Independent cleaner or cleaning company?

What matters Independent cleaner Cleaning company
Price Often lower Often a bit higher
Backup when sick or on vacation Usually none Another trained cleaner covers the visit
Checklist and training Depends on the person Same standard across the team
Supplies and equipment Varies Brought to every visit
Scheduling and communication Directly with one person Office or owner, plus your regular cleaner
Extra services Rarely Deep cleans, move-outs and more from the same team

Both can work well. The questions above help you judge either one.

Red flags to watch for

  • No written quote, or a price that changes after the visit without a conversation.
  • No clear answer about what is included.
  • A different stranger at your door every visit with no explanation.
  • No way to report a problem or no plan to fix one.
  • Slow or no replies before you have even booked.
  • Reviews that are all very old, or no reviews at all.

Read reviews the right way

Star ratings are a start, but the text tells you more. Look for reviews that mention the same things you care about: punctuality, the same cleaner over time, how problems were handled, move-out results or pets. Recent reviews matter more than old ones, and a company that replies to reviews usually cares about the details. You can read what Triangle families say about us on our reviews page.

Set your new cleaner up for success

  • Walk through priorities once. Tell them which rooms matter most and which surfaces need gentle products.
  • Mention pets and delicate items. Marble, natural stone, antiques and unsealed wood all need care.
  • Clear surfaces before visits. Pick up clothes, toys and papers so the time goes into cleaning, not tidying.
  • Give feedback early. Small notes after the first two visits shape every visit after.
  • Pick a steady schedule. Our guide on weekly vs biweekly house cleaning helps you choose.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a good house cleaner in Raleigh?

Start with recent Google reviews, then call two or three companies and ask the questions in this guide. Choose the one that gives clear answers, a written quote and a named cleaner.

Should I be home for the first cleaning?

You do not have to be, but many clients like to be home for a few minutes at the start of the first visit to walk through priorities. After that, most share a door code or a key.

How much should I tip a house cleaner?

Tipping is appreciated but not required. Many clients tip for a deep clean or a move-out, or give a gift at the holidays to a cleaner who comes regularly.

What if I am not happy with the cleaning?

Tell the company right away. At Lara Maids, if something was missed, we come back to fix it.

Do I need to provide cleaning supplies?

Not with us. We bring eco-friendly products and equipment to every visit, and we can use your products if you prefer.
