Fall Cleaning ChecklistGet Your Raleigh Home Ready for the Holidays

What to clean outside in October, inside before Thanksgiving, and the tasks worth handing off so the house is ready for guests.

Fall in the Triangle goes by fast. October brings leaves, a second round of pollen and the first cool mornings. By November the heat is on, and Thanksgiving guests are at the door before you know it. This fall cleaning checklist gives you a simple order to follow, so your home is ready before the calendar fills up instead of a rush the night before everyone arrives.

The short answer

Split your fall cleaning into three passes. Do the outside in October, while the weather is mild and dry. Do a deep clean inside in early to mid November. Then do a quick reset in the last few days before guests arrive. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and the weeks right before it are among the busiest of the year for cleaning teams in Raleigh, so book any professional help early.

Fall cleaning timeline

When Focus What to do
Early to mid October Outside Wash the deck, porch, driveway and siding. Clean outdoor furniture and store what you will not use.
Late October Air and systems Change the HVAC filter, dust vents and returns, clean the dryer lint trap and vent, test smoke and CO detectors.
Early to mid November Deep clean inside Kitchen, bathrooms, baseboards, ceiling fans, inside the oven and fridge.
Week of Thanksgiving Guest prep Guest room and bathroom ready, fridge cleared for the big shop, serving dishes out and washed.
Day before guests Quick reset Floors, bathrooms, kitchen counters, entry and a final pick-up.

Start outside, before it gets cold

Exterior work is easiest when days are mild and surfaces can dry in the sun, which in the Triangle usually means October. Once nights drop near freezing, washed wood and concrete take much longer to dry.

  • Decks and porches. Wet leaves sitting on wood boards leave dark stains and keep the surface damp, which feeds mildew. Sweep them off often and wash the deck before winter.
  • Driveways and walkways. Leaves leave brown tannin stains on concrete, and red clay builds up along the edges. A pressure wash lifts both.
  • Siding. The shaded side of the house, often the north side, is where green mildew and algae show up first. Siding needs a soft wash, not high pressure.
  • Outdoor furniture and grills. Clean cushions and frames before storing them, so they come out clean in spring.
  • Entry and doormats. Replace worn doormats and set up a spot for shoes. It keeps a lot of mud and leaves out of the house all season.

Our power washing service covers siding, driveways, decks, fences and patios, using the right pressure for each surface. For more on timing and methods, read our guide to power washing after pollen season.

Room by room fall cleaning checklist

Kitchen. This is the room that works hardest over the holidays, so give it the most attention.

  • Clean the inside of the oven before the big cook. Old spills smoke at high heat.
  • Empty the fridge, toss what has expired and wipe the shelves and drawers, so there is room for the holiday shop.
  • Degrease cabinet fronts near the stove and the range hood filter.
  • Check the pantry for expired spices, baking supplies and canned goods.
  • Take out serving dishes, platters and roasting pans and wash them ahead of time.
  • Descale the sink and faucet and clean the backsplash grout.

Guest room.

  • Wash the bedding, including the duvet or comforter, and vacuum the mattress.
  • Clear some closet space and one empty drawer for your guests.
  • Dust nightstands, lamps and window sills, and wipe down the door handles.
  • Add an extra blanket. Triangle nights get cold fast in November.

Bathrooms.

  • Work off soap scum on shower glass and tile, and clean the grout lines.
  • Clean the toilet base and behind it, where dust collects.
  • Wash the bath mats and shower curtain liner.
  • Set out fresh towels and stock toilet paper, soap and a spare toothbrush.

Living and dining areas.

  • Dust ceiling fans before switching them to run clockwise on low, which pushes warm air down in winter.
  • Dust baseboards, door frames and window sills by hand.
  • Vacuum under sofas and cushions, and wash throw blankets and pillow covers.
  • Wipe dining chairs and the table, including the legs and underside where kids touch.
  • Clean the inside of windows so the low fall sun does not show every smudge.

Air and systems.

  • Change the HVAC filter when you switch from cooling to heating.
  • Dust vent covers and return grilles so the first warm air is not full of dust.
  • Clean the dryer lint trap and check the dryer vent, which works harder with heavier fall clothes and bedding.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries.

What to do yourself and what to hand off

Task Easy to do yourself Worth handing off
Fridge and pantry clear-out Yes, you know what to keep Wiping shelves and drawers inside
Oven, cabinets, grout, baseboards Slow and tiring Yes, part of a deep clean
Guest linens, laundry, groceries If you have the time Yes, with housekeeping
Deck, driveway and siding Risky with the wrong pressure Yes, with power washing
HVAC filter and detectors Yes, a few minutes Not needed

A good rule: keep the decisions for yourself (what to throw out, where things go) and hand off the hours of scrubbing. That is where a professional team saves you the most time.

Getting ready for houseguests

When family comes for a few days, the guest bathroom and the kitchen are what they use most. A few small things make the visit easier on everyone:

  • Clear counter space in the guest bathroom and leave a small basket with essentials.
  • Write the Wi-Fi password on a card in the guest room.
  • Empty the dishwasher before guests arrive so it is ready for the first meal.
  • Plan one quick clean in the middle of a long stay, or right after guests leave.

If you host often between Thanksgiving and New Year, consider moving to weekly cleaning for the season. Our guide on weekly vs biweekly house cleaning explains how to pick the schedule, and you can go back to your usual plan in January.

Thinking about painting before the holidays?

Fall is one of the best seasons for exterior painting in North Carolina. Days are mild, humidity drops after summer, and paint cures more evenly than in July heat. If the outside of your home needs fresh paint, early fall gives the best window before winter. Inside, a freshly painted dining room or kitchen cabinets can change how the whole house feels for the holidays, but plan ahead, since those projects need time to finish and cure before a busy kitchen. See our house painting service for details.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start fall cleaning?

Early October is ideal for outdoor work, while the weather is mild and dry. Schedule the inside deep clean for early to mid November, so the home is ready before Thanksgiving.

Is fall cleaning the same as a deep clean?

Mostly, yes. A fall deep clean follows the same checklist as any deep clean, with extra attention to the kitchen, guest room and bathrooms before the holidays.

Can you clean before and after Thanksgiving?

Yes. Many families book a deep clean before guests arrive and a regular clean after they leave. Book early, since the weeks before Thanksgiving fill up fast.

Do you clean inside the oven and the fridge?

The inside of the oven is part of our deep clean. The inside of the fridge can be added to any deep clean. Just mention it when you request your quote.

Can you power wash in the fall?

Yes. Fall is a great time to wash decks, driveways and siding, as long as the days are mild and dry enough for surfaces to dry well.

Can housekeeping help with holiday prep?

Yes. Our housekeeping service covers laundry, guest linens, dishes, grocery shopping and keeping the pantry and closets in order. It does not include cleaning, which can be booked on the same day.
