Western Wake County keeps growing, and a lot of the families we meet in Cary, Apex, Holly Springs and Morrisville are either new to the area or new to their home. The first month sets the tone. Do things in the right order and the house feels like yours quickly; do them out of order and you end up cleaning around boxes and painting around furniture.
The right order
| When | What | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| Before move-in | Interior painting | Empty rooms paint faster and with no furniture to protect |
| Right after painting | Move-in deep clean | Inside every cabinet and appliance, before anything goes in them |
| Unpacking week | Organizing kitchen, pantry and closets | Systems set up once, instead of redoing them later |
| First weekend | Exterior check and power washing | Clean entry, driveway and deck for your first guests |
| From week three | Recurring cleaning | Keeps the fresh start going while life gets busy |
1. Paint before the furniture arrives
If you plan to change wall colors, do it while the home is empty. It is faster, cheaper and cleaner. Many new-construction homes in Apex and Holly Springs come with builder-grade flat paint that marks easily; a washable finish in hallways and kids rooms makes a real difference. Our interior painting includes full protection and cleanup.
2. Deep clean an empty home
Even new homes are dusty after construction and closing. Previous owners’ homes almost always need a proper clean inside cabinets, drawers, closets and appliances. It is the only time you will reach all of it so easily. Book the move-in clean after painting and before the truck.

The kitchen, pantry and main closet decide how the house works day to day. Setting them up with a plan the first time is far easier than reorganizing later. Our home organization service can unpack those rooms with you and set up systems that stay organized.
4. Check the outside
New neighbors see the outside first. If the home has sat on the market or through pollen season, a power wash of the siding, driveway and entry gives it a fresh start. Read more in our guide to power washing after pollen season.
5. Keep it that way
Once the house is clean and set up, recurring cleaning every one, two or four weeks keeps it there. Recurring clients keep the same cleaner on the same day, which matters when you are still learning a new town and do not want to explain your home twice.
A quick word on each town
Cary. Established neighborhoods and plenty of homes from the 1980s and 1990s, where dated wall colors and kitchen cabinets are often the first projects new owners tackle. Apex and Holly Springs. Lots of newer construction, which means construction dust, builder-grade paint and busy young families who value a recurring cleaning schedule. Morrisville. Townhomes and apartments close to RTP, where move-in and move-out cleaning is in constant demand. Fuquay-Varina. Larger lots, so decks, fences and driveways make power washing especially useful.
A simple first-month checklist
- Change the locks or door codes.
- Replace HVAC filters and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Find the water shutoff and the electrical panel.
- Paint, then clean, then unpack.
- Book recurring cleaning before the first busy month catches up with you.

Frequently asked questions
Should I clean or paint first?
Paint first, then clean. Painting creates dust and small drips; the move-in clean removes them and leaves the home ready for furniture.
Can one team handle painting and cleaning?
Yes. Lara Maids offers both, so they can be scheduled back to back around your move date.
Do you clean new construction homes?
Yes. New homes usually need a detailed clean to remove construction dust from cabinets, floors and fixtures before move-in.
